If you are looking to work in the heating and gas industry in Ontario, the G2 license is one of the most important certifications you can get. It is the most common license in the HVAC field and opens the door to a wide range of job opportunities in residential and light commercial work.
The G2 license—short for Gas Technician 2—is issued by Ontario's Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). It allows certified technicians to work with natural gas and propane appliances safely and legally.
Once you're certified, you can install, service, and maintain gas equipment like furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, boilers, and other heating appliances.
This license is perfect for:
• People starting a career in HVAC
• Apprentices ready to move up from a G3 license
• Anyone who wants to work independently on gas equipment in homes or small businesses
If you're looking for hands-on work with real-world job opportunities, G2 certification is a solid choice.
Once certified, a G2 technician can:
• Work independently (no supervision needed)
• Install, repair, and maintain appliances up to 400,000 BTUH
• Work in residential homes, small commercial buildings, and similar environments
This means you could be doing jobs like:
• Installing a new furnace
• Fixing a gas fireplace
• Servicing a water heater
• Running gas lines safely and legally
To get your G2 license, you must:
• First earn your G3 license
• Complete a TSSA-approved G2 training program
• Pass the G2 certification exam
Before you take the G2 exam, it is important to understand what you are walking into. You will have to manage your time and stress on test day.
Here is a quick breakdown of what the exam looks like so you can prepare with confidence.
• Multiple-choice questions
• Based on real-world HVAC and gas scenarios
• No hands-on or practical component
• Paper-based or computer-based depending on the testing center
• 3 hours total
• Around 100 to 150 questions
Time management is key—most questions are short, but a few require careful reading
• 75% or higher is needed to pass
• Results are sent by the TSSA
If you fail, you can retake the exam (after a waiting period)
